New to EU Expansion
EU VAT Registration for Sellers Expanding into Europe for the First Time
Not sure which countries you must register in, which seller certificates Amazon is going to ask for, or why your VAT number isn’t showing as valid on VIES?
AVASK takes the entire process off your plate — from obligation mapping to VIES activation — so you can launch on time and stay compliant from day one.

Most sellers reaching Europe for the first time are figuring out VAT on the fly…
You’ve sent your first FBA shipment — or you’re about to — and
you’ve just discovered that getting a VAT number in Germany takes
three months, not three days. That Amazon wants a tax certificate
you’ve never heard of. That your VAT number shows on your paperwork but not on VIES, and you don’t know what VIES activation even is. You’re doing this under launch pressure, with inventory already in motion, trying to hold a business together while learning an entirely new regulatory system in a country where you don’t speak the language.
AVASK turns that confusion into a sequenced, managed
plan — so you know exactly what’s happening, exactly
what comes next, and exactly when you can start selling.
This sounds like you if
- A precise obligation map — only register where you must, when you must
- You’re marketplace-first — Amazon to start, Shopify
and other channels later - You have little or no internal VAT or tax knowledge
- You’re learning the compliance rules under launch
pressure, with stock already in transit - You’re a founder or a small team — everyone wears
every hat at once
The compliance challenges
holding you back
Compliance is where most sellers get stuck. But a successful expansion involves more than
just tax registration. Here’s everything AVASK covers across your full expansion journey.
What do I actually need to
start selling in the EU?
The requirements differ by country, by product type, by whether you’re using FBA or shipping direct, and by how your supply chain is structured. It’s almost impossible to know where to start — without someone who does this every day.
VAT registration confusion
A missing document, a wrongly formatted bank letter, or a trading platform screenshot that doesn’t meet the tax office’s standards can set you back four to six weeks in a country that was already going to take three months.
Seller certificate delays
Amazon has flagged your account. You
need a tax certificate to resolve it. You
don’t know what it’s called in German,
which authority issues it, how long it takes, or what documents you need to apply. And your stock has been sitting in the fulfilment centre since Tuesday.
VIES validation problems
You have a VAT number. The marketplace needs a VIES-validated VAT number. These are not the same thing. VIES activation is a separate step that can take two to four
weeks after your registration is complete — and until it’s done, your cross-border EU sales and B2B invoicing are blocked
Waiting on VAT numbers
Every week you wait is money you didn’t budget for — and shortens the selling season you launched
into. You can’t speed up a tax authority, but you can have someone chasing them every week on your behalf.
Fear of getting it wrong
You’ve read the Amazon seller forums.
Frozen accounts. Backdated VAT
assessments for every month of
unregistered trading. Tax office
investigations in countries where you don’t speak the language and can’t find a specialist to help. You have one chance to do this correctly.

How we work with you
A clear, sequenced path from first call to fully compliant — you always know
what happens next

1. Obligation mapping
We review your marketplace setup,
your stock locations and your shipping
routes. We then map exactly which
countries you must register in — and
which you don’t need yet. No
guesswork. No over-registration. You
only pay for what you actually need.

2. Document preparation
Most EU VAT registration rejections are caused by missing documents or incorrectly formatted evidence — not by complex compliance issues. We check everything before we submit so your
application doesn’t bounce back and cost you weeks you can’t afford.

3. Submission & checking
No jargon. No 47-country tax guide. A single, sequenced action list mapped to your actual launch date — with one named specialist who knows your account, your markets, and your timeline.

4. Activation & go-live
Germany takes 2–3 months. Poland 4–6 weeks. Czech Republic 3–4 weeks. We give you realistic, country-specific timelines from day one so you can plan your inventory dispatch, your launch calendar, and your cash flow without surprises.

Benefits of working with AVASK

“We sent our first shipment to Germany before realising we needed
a VIES-activated VAT number, not just the number itself. AVASK
fixed both the registration and the VIES activation in under three
weeks — we launched on time and the account never had a
compliance hold.”
— Founder, UK consumer goods brand, first EU expansion — Germany & Netherlands
The difference a specialist makes
Going it alone
- Guessing which countries you legally need to register in — and
which can wait - Forms in German or French, rejected on technicalities you didn’t
know existed - Stock sitting idle in a warehouse accruing storage fees while you
wait on a number - Discovering seller certificates only when Amazon flags your account
- A VIES error that blocks your first cross-border invoice — with no
one to call - Backdated VAT assessments for months of unregistered trading
With AVASK
- A precise obligation map — only register where you must, when you must
- Applications completed correctly the first time, in the local
language, pre-checked before submission - Launch dates planned around realistic, country-specific timelines confirmed on day one
- Certificates identified, retrieved and submitted before they ever
block a sale or listing - VIES activation confirmed before you send your first cross-border
invoice - Registered correctly from the day you start selling — no exposure,
no retrospective liability
A typical first launch
The situation
A UK skincare brand used Amazon FBA to send stock into Germany and France ahead of Q4.
Three weeks before their planned launch, they discovered their German VAT number was not showing as valid on VIES —
and their French registration had been stalled for six weeks after a document rejection they hadn’t been notified about.
Their stock was in both fulfilment centres.
Storage fees were running. The Q4 window was closing.
What we did
AVASK took over both registrations. We
corrected the French application documents, resubmitted with compliant evidence, and completed everything in German and French respectively.
We chased both tax authorities twice weekly, and resolved the German VIES activation — which required a separate correspondence with the Bundeszentralamt für Steuern that had been missed in the original application process.
The outcome
Both VAT numbers came through with three weeks to spare before peak season. The account remained in good standing on both marketplaces.
The brand launched across Germany and France on schedule, without a second round of storage fees, and added Poland and the Netherlands the following quarter.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to register for VAT in every EU country I sell in?
Not necessarily — it depends on how you sell and where your stock is held. If you use Amazon Pan-EU FBA, you need VAT registrations in every country where Amazon stores your inventory — there is no minimum sales threshold for non-EU sellers holding stock locally. If you ship direct from outside the EU to EU consumers, the IOSS scheme may mean you only need a single registration. AVASK maps your exact obligation before you register for anything — so you only pay for the countries you actually need.
Why is my EU VAT number not showing as valid on VIES?
VIES activation is a separate step from receiving your VAT registration number. Once a tax authority issues your number, it typically takes a further 2–4 weeks to appear as active on the EU VAT Information Exchange System. During this window, cross-border B2B transactions and some marketplace invoices may fail validation. AVASK confirms VIES activation as part of our standard process — we do not hand over a VAT number until it is VIES-confirmed and your marketplace invoicing can function correctly.
Which seller certificates does Amazon EU require?
This varies by country and by product category. In Germany, France and Spain, Amazon requires EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility) registration numbers for applicable products — this covers packaging, batteries, and WEEE electronics. Some countries additionally require market-specific tax certificates or proof of registration before listings go live. AVASK identifies every certificate your account requires before we begin the registration process — nothing gets missed and flagged later.

How long does EU VAT registration take country by country?
Timelines vary significantly by country and by volume of applications at the tax authority. As a guide: Poland and Czech Republic typically take 4–6 weeks; Germany and France take 2–3 months; Spain can take up to 4 months. AVASK provides country-specific timelines from your first call so you can plan your inventory dispatch and launch schedule without building in false assumptions.

Do I need an EORI number to send FBA stock to Europe?
Yes. An EORI number is required for customs clearance — without one, your stock cannot cross an EU border. You need one EU EORI number (to clear goods into any EU country) and a separate UK EORI number if you’re also importing into the UK. AVASK includes EORI registration at no additional cost as part of every EU VAT registration.

Can you help if I've already been selling without registering?
Yes. Voluntary disclosure and retrospective VAT registration are part of AVASK’s service. If you’ve been trading in EU countries without a VAT registration, acting early reduces your exposure significantly — both in terms of the amount owed and the risk of a formal tax authority investigation. We handle the process without judgement, with the aim of resolving your liability position as efficiently as possible.
